Topic:
I am studying environmental education programs of grassroots organizations working on environmental health and environmental justice initiatives
Question:
because I want to find out how grassroots organizations construct narratives about environmental degradation to suggest strategic action (eg personal behavioral changes, political participation, community stewardship, monetary contribution) for their target demographics and communities,
Sub Questions:
Q1 - Broad: Do organizations develop environmental education materials with strategic environmental actions in mind?
Q1A- Broad: If so, how does this goal shape the environmental narrative and rhetoric that the organization promotes?
Q1B- Broad: If not, what are other factors that would contribute to shaping the environmental narrative?
Q2 - Case: How do the educational materials (lesson plans, brochures, website, events) of [name of organzitation(s) here] portray the past, current, and future environmental dilemmas facing the local environment?
Q3 - Case: What sort of omissions or inclusion of characters, factors, or events in the narrative are used to identify the source of environmental degradation or injustice?
Q3A - Case: How does the identity of the source (s) suggest the actions required for restoration?
Q3A_I - Is the connection between the source and the action make sense? (ie If the source is policy, is the action political?) If not, why?
Q4 - Case: How do environmental educators of [name of organzitation(s) here] shape the narrative of restoration within the larger narrative in order to promote strategic environmental actions? (under construction)
Conceptual Significance:
in order to understand the ways environmental education can frame environmental conflict, and how this frame is used to promote action in environmental justice issues
Potential Practical Application:
so that current and future organizers can better understand the role of environment education in shaping desired action outcomes.
